Car floor mats are the coverings that are used on car floors to protect the floor carpet from dust, water, insects, soil and other unwanted particles. Car floor mats also prevent snow and water from soaking through the carpet and rusting the car body. They are also a decorative accessory giving the car a tidy look. Car Floor mats are made by cutting the desired materials according to the size of the vehicle. Basic mats can be enhanced with embroidery, ribbing etc. They are then edged with matching bindings. These mats are chemically treated to reduce humidity, enhance color and maintain it .These mats are subject to a lot of wear and tear as they are in a heavy usage area. Hence, checking their condition from time to time is highly recommended.

Car floor mats are of two types. They are carpet floor mats and all weather car floor mats. Carpet floor mats are available in many colors. They protect the car floor and provide presentable interiors to the car. Rubber floor mats are more durable and tough for extreme weather conditions. Rubber car floor mats are available in standard rubber colors like black, tan and grey. Both types are washable.

Car floor mats are either custom made or semi-custom made. Custom floor mats are made to order in the exact size of the car floor. Individuals can specify the design and color and get mats made to order. Such mats will be a perfect fit for the vehicle. Semi-custom made car floor mats are not made specifically for each vehicle. They come in standard sizes and the size closest to the vehicle floor is used. They are about 90-95% accurate. They are available in the stores and individuals can choose the best option out of the mats available. It is common practice to use removable rubber mats over fixed floor mats. This helps in cleaning and maintaining the mats.

Every car – regardless of make or a brand name – unavoidably needs a floor mat. A good quality mat is your car’s ally in maintaining its appearance. Car floor mats can keep the car clean by protecting the flooring from the usual day-to-day wear such as spills and dirty shoe soles.

Choosing a good car floor mat

Car floor mats are available in many shapes, sizes, and in various materials, and choosing from among them can get confusing. Here are some quick tips.

Choose darker colors. Car floor mats with darker colors are far easier to maintain because stains and other discolorations are not very visible on them. They also don’t fade as easily, because you don’t have to scrub or wash dark-colored car floor mats as often as you would the light-colored versions. Dark colors (especially black) are also more versatile than other colors – they go with any color seat cover.

Choose sturdy materials. Car floor mats should be made of heavyweight composition rubber (which is easier to clean) or interwoven nylon yarn of super heavy density for it to withstand wear and tear.

When buying a nylon car mat, always go for the thick mat – they come in handy when water and other liquids need to be absorbed and dried up quickly. A thin rubber mat may not hold the water much and, hence, result in a big mess. A thick rubber mat, mainly made for the bad weather, has deeper grooves that enable it to hold water, ice, and mud better.

Reminder: A nylon car mat may look nice and can absorb the water well, but it also has its disadvantages. It leaves the car floor more exposed. Although it soaks water, it dries very slowly. If the water or liquid spilled is more than two cups, then it will flow around and may cause mold or corrosion to your car’s flooring.
