The used car market is filled with everything from rust buckets to high performance dream machines.
Your first priority is to decide on your budget. Once you’ve agreed upon your budget you have to be strong willed and stick to it.
Now that you agree to stick to your budget you have to sort through the listings and find the best buy – separating it from the rubbish and buckets of bolts that may cost you a fortune in the near future.
Decide what type of car you and your family need before opening the classifieds and checking the listing guides. Some questions to ask yourself include:
What size do you need?
How many occupants do you plan on carrying?
How much can you afford weekly to pay for gasoline and maintenance?
What is your insurance premium budget?
How many miles will you cover?
How many doors do you need?
You may want to invest in image, but is it practical?
What climatic considerations do you need to plan for?
What color interior do you need?
Do you need to haul a trailer or caravan?
Will you need to carry regular large loads?
Now you have decided what you need, open the classifieds, surf the internet or cruise down to your local car dealer.
Make sure you note all of your budgets and needs and take them with you. Do not loose sight of your affordability or needs.
When you see your dream two-door sports car just a few thousand dollars over your budget, with your first child arriving in four weeks, you will need to look at your list and remind yourself to be frugal and serious.
A trawl through the classifieds will throw up any number of potentials. Make a list of your wants and needs and check these off against any car that takes your fancy.
