So you have cruised the dealers, checked the online listings and looked at the classifieds you’ve see a few vehicles that you are interested in – so what is your next step and where is the best place to buy your used car?

Buying from a dealer is easier, you can see the full array of available vehicles side-by-side, but you will pay a premium.

Buy Privately

This is the cheapest way to buy a used car, but you have to be aware of the price range of cars as many sellers will try and ask for more than the vehicle is worth. You will have no recourse or no guarantee.

Franchise Dealers

Here is where you will find the latest models and largest stocks. The cars in these lots have generally been cared for more and have lower mileage ranges. Franchise dealers will have higher additional fees.

Independent Dealers

The independent dealer of today is experienced and employees would have once worked for the franchised dealer having received experience and knowledge from their corporate training. Car in these lots may have a high mileage but as the dealer has to live on reputation you will be well taken care of and will probably get better after sales care. It’s here the dealers will be open for price bargaining.

Auctions

It is at the auctions that you can get the best buy and save the most money. Check out the location of your nearest auction lot and call them when for the date of the next auction. But remember to take you lists – don’t get carried away and never overdo your budget. The auctioneers will generally not let you test-drive the car so you need to know your stuff first.
